U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter Q&A: Pulisic's best position, beating Mexico in the Gold Cup and moving on from World Cup failure

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- It's the day before the U.S. men's national team is set to play Venezuela and Gregg Berhalter eases into a chair in the lobby of the team's hotel. The mood is light: the players' families have accompanied the team to get some quality time in before the start of the Gold Cup. Kids are running around and the squad is grateful for the time spent.

Little do Berhalter and the players know that in less than 24 hours the U.S. will be blown out by La Vinotinto 3-0, a massive wakeup...

U.S. national team roundtable: Should we be worried about their Gold Cup chances?

The 2019 Gold Cup begins on Saturday, June 15 as Mexico take on Cuba in Los Angeles and the U.S. kick off their campaign to defend their crown next Tuesday with a game against Guyana in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While Mexico look just fine with nothing but wins under Gerardo "Tata" Martino, the same cannot be said of the Yanks: the Gregg Berhalter regime has been uneven since he took over in January, with the recent warm-up defeats to Jamaica and Venezuela causing some panic among the fans.

Berhalter, U.S. have myriad problems to solve before upcoming Gold Cup

The United States' final game before the Gold Cup was a disaster for Gregg Berhalter's side, which got crushed by Venezuela in Cincinnati.

CINCINNATI -- After the U.S. men's national team lost 1-0 to Jamaica last Wednesday, it didn't seem as if things could get much worse for the Americans.

Four days later, they're worse. Way worse.

The U.S. was absolutely hammered 3-0 -- on home turf no less -- against a Venezuela side that gratefully accepted all the gifts the Americans gave them. And to be clear, the U.S. was in giving mood. There was the horrible pass from goalkeeper Zack Steffen that set up the first of two goals from Salomon...

Steffen 2/10, Long 3/10 as U.S. thrashed in final Gold Cup tuneup

The United States' final game before the Gold Cup was a disaster for Gregg Berhalter's side, which got crushed by Venezuela in Cincinnati.

Coming off a depressing loss to Jamaica on Wednesday night in Washington, Gregg Berhalter and the United States men's national team needed a strong performance Sunday against Venezuela in Cincinnati to reclaim some confidence ahead of the Gold Cup.

They did not get it.

Thanks to a series of defensive errors in the first half and an attack that failed to break through Venezuela's deep-lying defense, the Americans fell 3-0 in front of 23,955 at Nippert Stadium.

U.S. still not at full strength but Berhalter, Altidore & Co. ready to work vs. Venezuela

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The final dress rehearsal for the Gold Cup has arrived for the U.S. men's national team as the U.S. takes on Venezuela this Sunday. The only problem is that a few understudies are still playing prominent roles in place of the headliners.

Christian Pulisic isn't available. Neither is Michael Bradley, while minutes for Jozy Altidore and newcomer Tyler Boyd will be limited to varying degrees. Tyler Adams won't join up with the team until June 11. All are expected to be ready...

Sargent snub the biggest surprise from Berhalter's U.S. Gold Cup roster

Herculez Gomez explains why success for the USMNT at the Gold Cup will be defined by making the final, not necessarily repeating as champions.
A long-distance strike from Shamar Nicholson and a goalkeeping masterclass from Andre Blake propelled Jamaica past a youthful USMNT in D.C.

WASHINGTON -- As Josh Sargent maneuvered through the postmatch mixed zone Wednesday night, the look of disappointment on his face was clear. He had nearly equalized for the U.S. late in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Jamaica, only to be denied by a sharp save from Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake. It capped off what had been a difficult night for him, as well as his U.S. teammates.

"It was tough to get on the ball sometimes, and it was a difficult game it seems like for us to get a rhythm," he said....
