UAE file complaint against Qatar player eligibility after Asian Cup loss

Asian Cup hosts United Arab Emirates have launched a late challenge to get their regional rival Qatar disqualified by alleging they fielded two ineligible players at the tournament.

The complaint adds another layer to Qatar's politically-charged progress to the final of the continental football showpiece in the UAE, which is one of four countries boycotting Doha.

There was an angry reaction from the home crowd in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday as the UAE were routed in the semifinal, with shoes thrown at...

AFC to probe sandal throwing at Qatar vs. UAE in Asian Cup semifinal

The Asian Football Confederation has launched an investigation into the throwing of objects, including a barrage of sandals, at Qatar players during Tuesday's Asian Cup semifinal against United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi.

Three Qatar players were showered with footwear and drinks bottles thrown by a hostile crowd while celebrating goals in the 4-0 thrashing of hosts UAE, which secured a place in Friday's final against Japan.

"The AFC is conducting a thorough investigation into events at the Asian...

Qatar defied sandal-throwing local fans to storm into the Asian Cup final for the first time with a 4-0 win over hosts United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, setting up a decider against Japan in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Boualem Khoukhi's early strike and an eighth goal of the tournament from striker Almoez Ali gave Qatar a 2-0 half-time lead and captain Hassan Al-Haydos and Hamid Ismail completed the rout in the last 10 minutes.

The UAE had been hoping to reach the Asian Cup final for the second time, but...

Asian Cup: Defending champ Australia, South Korea see early exits

Defending champions Australia crashed out of the Asian Cup on Friday when a contentious Ali Mabkhout goal earned hosts the United Arab Emirates a 1-0 victory and a semifinal meeting with Qatar next week.

Mabkhout struck midway through the second half after Milos Degenek under-hit a pass back to Mat Ryan, and the Al Jazira man swooped to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net for his ninth goal in two Asian Cups.

The Australians complained Degenek had been fouled prior to giving...

Yusuf before Iraq's game against Vietnam outside the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The Asian Cup is considered the World Cup for Asian nations, and one can see a glimpse of that in the playing styles on display. The West Asian nations (Saudi Arabia, Iran) are tough, rugged and play a fairly physical game, while those from further east (China, South Korea) are quick, technical and extremely clever at controlling the tempo in games. Then there are teams like India, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines and Turkmenistan, who are either all on debut or returning to this tournament after a...
