Baxter resigns as South Africa head coach

South Africa head coach Stuart Baxter resigned on Friday and said he felt the time was right to move on with a new cycle of Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers on the horizon.

His decision comes just weeks after South Africa reached the quarterfinals of the Cup of Nations in Egypt, knocking out the hosts in the round of 16.

It was a second spell in charge of South Africa for the Englishman, who turns 66 later this month.

He was first appointed in 2004 with an eye on the 2010 World Cup,...

Former Chiefs, Pirates star Marc Batchelor shot dead

Former Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates footballer Marc Batchelor was shot dead outside his home in Johannesburg on Monday, police have confirmed.

The 49-year-old striker, who also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, was shot in his car. Another person in the vehicle was unharmed in the incident.

"He was attacked by two men who were driving a motorbike," a police spokesman told the South African Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday.

"He was about to drive into his premises. The suspects shot several times...

Chukwueze's goal, Rohr's tactics guide Nigeria into AFCON semis

Villarreal youngster Samuel Chukweze was a surprising starter but proved a brilliant one vs. South Africa.

CAIRO -- Nigeria are into the semifinals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, as a dramatic late goal from centre-back William Troost-Ekong saw the Super Eagles deservedly edge South Africa 2-1 to reach the last four. Colin Udoh provides his three major takeaways from the Super Eagles' victory.

1. Rohr outfoxes Baxter on the touchline

Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr has had his tactical acumen questioned over and over by many Nigerians, especially in the run-up to his side's quarterfinal with South Africa.

Nigeria snuck into the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals when William Troost Ekong scored with one minute remaining to give them a 2-1 win over a gallant South Africa as the tournament served up more drama on Wednesday.

Troost Ekong turned the ball in with his knee from a corner just as Nigeria seemed to be in danger of throwing away a game they dominated for more than an hour.

Samuel Chukwueze, recalled to the side after missing the previous round, put the Super Eagles in front when he scored at...

Nigeria beware Thembinkosi Lorch, Bafana's quiet assassin

The emergence of South Africa's Thembinkosi Lorch has been one of the most fascinating subplots at the Africa Cup of Nations, as the softly spoken winger overcame family tragedy to set up Bafana Bafana's quarterfinal showdown with Nigeria on Wednesday.

In providing the match winner against Egypt in the Round of 16, sending shockwaves across the continent, Lorch showed why he was named Premier Soccer League Player of the Year in South Africathis past season.

Even more impressively, he took...
