Zambia draw with Namibia to top Group B

Afcon qualifying: Lesser lights take centre stage on final weekend

When the Confederation of African Football ratified an expansion to the Africa Cup of Nations in July 2017, introducing eight more teams to the biennial competition, the dynamic of the qualifying program was always going to change.

As had been the case ahead of the European Championship in 2016, for which UEFA had instigated an increase from 16 to 24 teams, many of the continent's heavyweights cruised to the tournament with games to spare.

However, an overall decrease in drama among the bigger nations...

Star-less Ivory Coast embark on new era under Ibrahim Kamara

Some of the Ivory Coast's most high-profile players have been making headlines this week, with Yaya Toure completing a return to Olympiakos and Gervinho starring for Parma as they were defeated by Juventus in Serie A.

Yet the Elephants will be without these two - and many other of their most recognisable stars - when they face Rwanda in their second Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on September 9.

The match will mark the start of Ibrahim Kamara's tenure, with the respected local coach appointed in...

Gervinho serves reminder of enduring class as three-year Serie A wait ends

Gervinho, like many of African football's biggest names of his generation, opted to see out many of his peak years in one of the world's lesser leagues.

The wideman was 28 when he departed AS Roma for Hebei China Fortune, but returned to the Italian game this summer when he signed a three-year deal with Parma.

He's wasted little time in getting back into the swing of things in the Italian top flight, with his goal against Juventus this weekend coming in just his second performance for his new club.

Mainz reject big-money Premier League bid for Jean-Philippe Gbamin

Mainz have rejected a big-money bid for Ivory Coast international Jean-Philippe Gbamin from an unnamed Premier League suitor, according to the club's sporting director.

Speaking to Bild, Rouven Schroeder confirmed that the Bundesliga side had received a significant offer from a Premier League club but have no intention of letting the 22-year-old leave.

"The good thing is we already received an extraordinary offer, but we turned it down," Schroeder began. "Jean-Philippe will stay."

Schroeder added...

Joris Gnagnon completes Sevilla switch

Joris Gnagnon has signed for Sevilla on a five-year deal from Stade Rennais, the Spanish heavyweights have confirmed.

In a statement on the club website, Los Rojiblancos have revealed they they've recruited the 21-year-old from Ligue 1, with the Franco-Ivorian defender penning a deal that will keep him at the club until 2023.

The centre-back featured 36 times in the French top flight for Rennes last season, netting against both AS Monaco and Olympique de Marseille.

Despite his slender years, Gnagnon...
