Gylfi Sigurdsson in Iceland's World Cup squad despite injury

After becoming the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup, Iceland celebrated with their famous Viking clap.

Iceland have selected playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson and captain Aron Gunnarsson in their 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia even though both midfielders are out injured.

Sigurdsson, Iceland's star player, has been out with a knee injury since early March and will miss the final game of the Premier League on Sunday for Everton.

Gunnarsson is recovering after undergoing knee surgery in late April.

Iceland made the squad announcement in a video on YouTube on Friday.

Iceland leaders to boycott 2018 World Cup in Russia over spy poisoning in U.K.

U.K. foreign secretary Boris Johnson says Britain may not participate normally in the World Cup if Russia is proven to be behind the unexplained illness of a former spy.

Iceland's government representatives will not attend the World Cup in Russia this summer, in solidarity with the United Kingdom after a chemical attack on Russian former agent Sergei Skripal and her daughter in Salisbury, which the British government has blamed on Moscow.

"Among the measures taken by Iceland is the temporary postponement of all high-level bilateral dialogue with Russian authorities. Consequently, Icelandic leaders will not attend the FIFA World Cup in Russia this summer," a ministry...

Iceland boss expects 'everybody' to support them at World Cup in Russia

Aron Gunnarsson attributes Iceland's recent successes to their team mentality and dedication to hard work.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Iceland will very much be the away team when it faces Mexico on Friday in front of over 60,000 fans in Levi's Stadium, but the coach of the smallest ever nation to make a World Cup isn't expecting the same at Russia 2018.

Asked if the atmosphere going into a stadium full of Mexico fans would be representative of what Iceland may face in Russia, Heimir Hallgrimsson wasn't convinced.

"Not particularly, I think everybody will support Iceland in Russia," said Hallgrimsson in a...

Everton boss Sam Allardyce annoyed by Gylfi Sigurdsson injury statement

ESPN FC's Ale Moreno breaks down the latest transfer rumours surrounding Hector Bellerin, Jack Wilshere, Jamie Vardy and more in Transfer Rater.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce has said he is optimistic that club record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson will be back before the end of the season.

On Wednesday, the club suggested in a statement that the Iceland international midfielder's knee injury would sideline him for six to eight weeks.

However, Allardyce was unhappy with that estimate.

"Someone gave out the wrong statement. It can be less than that. Whoever gave that statement out is going to get a b--------g today, so well done," he said.
