Liga MX Power Rankings: Leon keep top spot as playoffs near

Angel Mena
Leon have been unstoppable this season, but there's still quite a bit of skepticism that they'll be able to win the league.

Only three teams have been eliminated from playoff contention as the Liga MX regular season nears its end. That's right, Lobos BUAP fans -- technically, you still have a chance at silverware. But really. This week, we'll look at each team's chances to win the Liguilla crown, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Here are the Power Rankings after Week 14:

Liga MX W2W4: Herrera's up-and-down America play Clasico Joven; Boy debuts for Chivas

It's almost time for Week 14 of the 2019 Clausura! Before Liga MX returns with its latest set of highly anticipated games, here are three things to watch out for.

America plays Clasico Joven after up-and-down week

In recent days, we've seen two significantly contrasting moods from Club America manager Miguel Herrera.

Always wearing his heart on his sleeve, the manager pounded his fists last Saturday in a post-game press conference that followed a 3-2 Liga MX defeat by Tijuana. An infuriated...

Liga MX Power Rankings: Leon stay top; Cruz Azul on the rise

Fernando Navarro (R) of Leon celebrates his goal against Necaxa
Fernando Navarro has impressed for Leon this season.

We're now less than a month before the regular season ends. The business end of the Clausura 2019 is nigh and only two teams (Leon and Tigres) have stamped their ticket to the postseason. From there, only six points separate third-placed Monterrey and 11th-placed Lobos BUAP. As is customary in Liga MX, whichever team has the best form in the season's final few games should find success in the postseason, which is why this week we'll focus on each club's form over the last five games.

Chivas appoint Tomas Boy to replace Jose Cardozo as head coach

Veteran coach Tomas Boy has been tasked with resuscitating Cruz Azul.
Tomas Boy most recently managed Cruz Azul in 2016.

Liga MX giants Chivas have appointed veteran Tomas Boy as the club's new head coach, the Guadalajara club announced on Wednesday.

Boy has previously managed Chivas' city rivals Atlas and comes into the club with the team down in 14th position in Liga MX and with minimal chance of making the 2019 Clausura playoffs.

"With a long career in Mexican football and full awareness of the situations and scenarios that sometimes have to be faced, Tomas Boy has experience of infusing self-esteem into his teams...

Liga MX review: VAR at the forefront in Xolos' controversial win

Tijuana's 3-2 win over Club America on Saturday reached peak levels of Liga MX controversy and excitement.  The crowd in attendance at the Estadio Caliente were treated to a golazo in the first half for Club America, a late comeback for Xolos in the second half, a strange amount of stoppage time, questionable officiating, and of course, a fiery Miguel "Piojo" Herrera in a post-game press conference.

"You can't play football like that," the Club America manager said about the refereeing. Although...
