Luan is one player firmly on the bubble for Brazil's World Cup squad.
Gremio's Luan celebrates a goal against Independiente.

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil -- Brazilian side Gremio have won the Recopa Sudamericana, beating Argentina's Independiente 5-4 in a penalty shootout on Wednesday.

The two-legged final ended 1-1 on aggregate, with no goals scored after 120 minutes of play in the second leg.

Independiente enlist local wizard to help win Recopa Sudamericana

Having drawn in the first leg last week, Independiente have enlisted the help of a local wizard to ensure they beat Gremio in the upcoming second leg of their Recopa Sudamericana duel.

Independiente made the long journey across the border and into Brazil earlier this week, arriving in Porto Alegre late on Tuesday evening.

Atletico Nacional beat Chapecoense for Recopa title on celebratory night

More than five months after that tragic air crash, Chapecoense made it safely up to Medellin to face Atletico Nacional in a game that will enrich the history of football.

In the wake of the tragedy the two clubs became firm friends, and the ties were strengthened on a moving night in Medellin.

Centre-back Neto, one of the survivors, met up with the Colombian policeman who found him lying in the wreckage and began his rescue at a moment when the search was in danger of being abandoned. A ceremony...

After rebuilding, Chapecoense finally meet Atletico Nacional in Medellin

Chapecoense, the Brazilian club that suffered the air disaster at the end of November, had a reason to smile on Sunday, when their rebuilt team landed the local title. For the sixth time, and the second year in succession, they are champions of Santa Catarina, one of the 27 states that make up this giant country.

It was an emotional celebration, with coach Vagner Mancini and his players paying tribute to those who died over five months ago. Being champions of their southern state is evidence...

United by tragedy, Chapecoense to finally play Nacional in Recopa

Mario Kempes went to Rio to meet the father of Everton Kempes, who died in the charter plane carrying the Chapecoense team.

South America's Recopa Sudamericana is the classic "title that is not really a title."

It is the annual home and away meeting of the winners of the continent's two club competitions, the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana.

The flaw is obvious. It is not a meeting of equals -- at least in terms of prestige. The Libertadores is so much more important than the Sudamericana, and nothing that happens over the course of these two games is going to change that. In the normal course of events,...
