Bayer Leverkusen seal deal for Brazilian teenager Paulinho

Paulinho
Paulinho has signed for Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen completed the signing of Brazilian forward Paulinho from Vasco da Gama for next season in what the Bundesliga club called "a real coup."

The 17-year-old Paulinho signed a contract through June 2023, effective from his next birthday on July 15.

A transfer fee was not disclosed, but kicker magazine in Germany reported Leverkusen took advantage of financial problems at Vasco da Gama by having its offer of just under €20 million accepted -- €10m less than his release clause.

Is Brazil starlet Paulinho leaving Vasco da Gama for Bayer Leverkusen too soon?

It is 20 years since Brazil's Vasco da Gama won the Copa Libertadores and it seems that their fans will have to wait at least one more year for a second triumph.

The 19-year-old is reported to have cost £10 million, and is expected to head out on loan to City's sister club Girona in Spain.

Douglas was one of Vasco's best players last season and earned a call-up by Brazil for the South American Under-20 Championship at the start of the year.

He attracted the attention of City's scouts based in South America and will follow in the...

Neglected Maracana and fan violence reveal Brazil's dark underbelly

Maracana wide view Rio
The Maracana is one of world football's most storied venues. But it's not being treated as such.

On Wednesday, Fluminense host Rio de Janeiro rivals Botafogo in the city's giant Maracana stadium. It is the 20th game the ground has staged this year -- and no one knows when the next one will be.

One of football's most iconic venues, the Maracana was built for the 1950 World Cup, and expensively rebuilt for the same tournament in 2014. It has since been handed over to a private consortium to administer. They are desperate to get out. Changes to the terms of the contract, they...
