ATK, Chennaiyin dominate ISL Team of the Season

Here is our team of the 2019-20 ISL season, picked with the intention of having a reasonable ability to actually play well together on the pitch if the hypothetical scenario ever came through. Of course, there have been minor alterations and some imagination added to the mix, but we are reasonably confident that the team makes rational sense playing in this 4-2-3-1 formation. And yes, as per ISL rules, there are only five foreigners in the team.

Goalkeeper: Gurpreet Singh Sandhu [Bengaluru FC]

Chennaiyin continue doing the impossible by making ISL playoffs

As Lucian Goian saw the ball skim off the top of a head in the crowded Mumbai City penalty area and hurtle toward him, he must surely have known it - connect properly, and his team would win this. Connect properly, and Chennaiyin FC would be in the playoffs of the Indian Super League (ISL).

Up until that point, Goian, a hulking, slightly bumbling centre-back, had scored a grand total of 11 goals in 362 appearances spread across 16 years of professional football. Neither should he have been there,...

There was heart-break for Mumbai City FC in the most poetic form, as Lucian Goian scored the winner against his former club to help Chennaiyin FC complete a stunning turnaround and qualify for the ISL playoffs.

Chennaiyin, who looked down and out even a few weeks ago, have won six out of their last seven matches under new manager Owen Coyle, helping them seal a playoff berth ahead of Mumbai and Odisha FC.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in what was an intense contest that...

ATK, Brandon Fernandes and Coro: The best of ISL in 2019

With 49 games out of the way, the ISL is done and dusted for 2019. The new year begins with one of the marquee clashes of the season, as FC Goa travel to Bengaluru FC.

What of the matches gone by? Which team has impressed the most and which players have been the biggest standouts?

Best team: ATK

It could be argued that FC Goa, who lead the table, have been the best but ATK nick it simply by virtue of threatening to do more damage up front in each and every game.

In Roy Krishna and David Williams,...

AIFF to investigate ISL referee's alleged racist remark against Mumbai player

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Tuesday tasked its disciplinary committee to investigate the allegedly racist remarks made against Mumbai City FC's Serge Kevyn Angoue by Saudi Arabian referee Turki Mohammed Al Khudayr in an Indian Super League match.

Mumbai City FC head coach Jorge Costa had alleged that the referee, who officiated his side's match against Bengaluru FC on Sunday, called Angoue a monkey.

"AIFF has received a complaint from Mumbai City FC against Saudi Arabian referee...
