Tim Cahill defends his World Cup spot: No time for 'sentimental' picks

The ESPN panel in London are skeptical of Australia ahead of the World Cup with Bert van Marwijk's defensive mindset and an aging squad.

Tim Cahill insists there was no sentimentality behind his selection in Australia's 26-man squad, and that he will be "driving even harder" to book his spot at a fourth World Cup in Russia.

The 38-year-old Socceroos stalwart defied his age and lack of club game time for Millwall to make the second cut in Bert van Marwijk's extended squad ahead of in-form Hibernian striker Jamie Maclaren.

It came a week after Van Marwijk labelled Cahill "a special case" and subtly intimated the country's all-time...

Australia's provisional World Cup squad includes Tim Cahill, Daniel Arzani

Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk has stamped talisman Tim Cahill and uncapped teenage gun Daniel Arzani as players who can "make a difference" at the World Cup.

And the Dutchman offered a strong hint Cahill could well be on the way to Russia next month for a fourth consecutive World Cup, labelling the 38-year-old striker "a special case" after naming the country's all-time leading scorer in his extended 32-man squad.

Croatian-born 21-year-old right-back Fran Karacic is the shock selection while...

Millwall secured their highest league finish since 2002 after Shaun Williams' penalty earned them a 1-0 victory over Championship play-off contenders Aston Villa.

Williams sent goalkeeper Mark Bunn the wrong way from 12 yards on the half-hour mark to secure a seventh-place finish for Neil Harris' side on the final day.

Villa meanwhile were already confirmed to finish fourth in the table and will face Middlesbrough in the play-offs after Patrick Bamford's injury-time equaliser against Ipswich.

Middlesbrough are guaranteed a place in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs after goals from Britt Assombalonga and Jonny Howson secured a 2-0 win over Millwall.

Boro have booked their play-off place with a game to spare, although the identity of their opponents will not be clear until they have completed their campaign at Ipswich next weekend.

Millwall still have a statistical chance of claiming a play-off place, although in reality their hopes are gone as they would need a nine-goal swing to overhaul...

Millwall's Tim Cahill suspended after accepting charge of violent conduct

Tim Cahill
Tim Cahill re-joined his first professional club Millwall in January 2018.

Millwall forward Tim Cahill has been banned for three matches after accepting a charge of violent conduct.

The 38-year-old was charged by the Football Association retrospectively after the Australia international escaped punishment having appeared to elbow Fulham defender Ryan Fredericks during his side's 3-0 defeat last Friday.

Cahill will miss the last two games of the Championship season as Millwall look to secure a play-off place.

"Tim Cahill will miss Millwall's next three matches after he...
