VAR denied Newcastle Jets a point after Ben Kennedy saved a penalty to seal all three points for the Central Coast Mariners.

Central Coast made a stunning start to life under former Matildas boss Alen Stajcic, shocking Newcastle 3-2 in a stoppage-time thriller at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Jets fought back from 3-0 down to have a chance to equalise in injury time on Saturday when Jonathan Aspropotamitis was deemed to have fouled Roy O'Donovan, whose penalty shot was then saved by Ben Kennedy. Daniel Georgievski scored off the rebound to spark celebrations but VAR then ruled he had encroached into the area early.

Koutroumbis and Petratos score as Jets beat Melbourne Victory on the road.

Sacked Matildas boss Alen Stajcic is back in football after he was appointed caretaker coach of A-League strugglers Central Coast.

Stajcic, controversially axed as coach of the Australian women's team in January, will take over the Mariners for the remainder of the season.

The 45-year-old fills the void left by the sacking of Mike Mulvey just hours after the rock-bottom Mariners' 8-2 home thrashing by Wellington on Saturday night.

Central Coast Mariners sack Mike Mulvey after record loss to Wellington Phoenix

Melbourne City blow two goal lead late, settle for draw versus Glory
Koutroumbis and Petratos score as Jets beat Melbourne Victory on the road.

Coach Mike Mulvey has been sacked by Central Coast Mariners following their chastising 8-2 A-League defeat to Wellington Phoenix.

Saturday evening's result left the rock-bottom Mariners with just seven points from 21 games.

The scoreline equalled the competition's biggest scoring match when the Mariners crashed to an 8-2 home loss against the Newcastle Jets just 11 months ago.

The storm clouds swirling around Gosford proved an apt metaphor as a troubled Central Coast played Wellington back into form by crashing to a record-equalling 8-2 defeat on Saturday evening.

Missing players due to suspension and disciplinary reasons, a hugely inexperienced Mariners side were carved apart by two-goal Phoenix striker Roy Krishna and his attacking cohorts.

Down 4-0 at half time, the home side were 7-0 down by the 59th minute mark and looking likely to suffer by an all-time A-League...

Brisbane took a major step towards handing back-to-back A-League wooden spoons to the Mariners with a drama-charged 5-3 win at Central Coast Stadium on Friday.

The result put second-last Brisbane eight points clear of Central Coast with seven rounds remaining.

Central Coast finished with nine men and played the last 28 minutes with 10 after Aiden O'Neill was shown a second yellow card for dissent.

Captain Matt Simon copped a second yellow in the fifth minute of additional time for a foul after a...
