Central Coast suffered another bout of red card heartache in the A-League after crashing to a 3-2 loss to the Phoenix in Wellington.

The out-of-luck Mariners had to digest a 10th successive defeat but this was one of the most sour for Mike Mulvey's last-placed side, having fully warranted their 2-0 half-time lead.

A straight red card for defender Kye Rowles 40 seconds after the break turned the match on its head, allowing Wellington to control the game and extend their unbeaten run to a club record...

Alex Brosque scored a hat trick against the Central Coast Mariners to send Sydney FC top of the table in the A-League.

Kalifa Cisse was the villain as he cost Central Coast Mariners the chance of pulling off one of the upsets of A-League season away at Sydney FC.

Instead Alex Brosque netted his first hat trick in the competition and Adam Le Fondre made history in a 5-2 victory over the 10-man Mariners at Jubilee Stadium on Friday.

Connor Pain and Aiden O'Neill both scored for the visitors, though Aaron Calver had the final say to provisionally lift the Sky Blues to the top of the table.

Talking point of the round

Things are falling apart at the bottom of the table right now. That's both figurative and literal for Central Coast Mariners, who watched on as a goal actually collapsed in their 4-1 home defeat to league-leading Perth Glory on New Years Eve.

So, not only are Central Coast experiencing the worst start...
