A-League midseason review: Sydney FC, Melbourne City lead the pack

Sydney continue their impressive form vs. Newcastle jets to move further clear at the top of the A-League.
Two extra-time goals help end Central Coast Mariners drought against Melbourne Victory in a 3-2 win.
Richarlison's goal led Everton to a win vs. Brighton, while Mat Ryan gave to bushfire relief with each save.
Perth Glory made it five on the trot in a stellar display against a woeful Adelaide with a 3-0 win.
A blockbuster first half fizzled in the second as Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City failed to best one another.
Wellington Phoenix matched their club's unbeaten streak record with ease against a disappointing Wanderers.

We are near the midway point -- curse you, uneven rounds and byes -- of the A-League season. It's time for some perspective.

To this point, it appears the competition this season is broken up into three tiers, as reflected by the ladder: Sydney, Melbourne City to Adelaide United, then the rest. It's the A-League, though, so anything can happen between now and the time the Toilet Seat is lifted in triumph.

Central Coast's Sam Silvera on trial with MLS side LAFC

Two extra-time goals help end Central Coast Mariners drought against Melbourne Victory in a 3-2 win.

Sunday's dramatic win over Melbourne Victory could be Sam Silvera's last A-League appearance for Central Coast with the youngster trialling at MLS club LAFC.

The 19-year-old Silvera came off the bench late in the Mariners' action-packed 3-2 win over Victory at Central Coast Stadium.

A day later LAFC listed Silvera among three trialists on their pre-season roster for a camp that started at the club's performance centre in California.

The Mariners confirmed Silvera has been granted a leave of absence...

Two extra-time goals help end Central Coast Mariners drought against Melbourne Victory in a 3-2 win.

Central Coast have come back for a thrilling, drama-filled 3-2 A-League win over Melbourne Victory in Gosford. Two late Matt Simon penalties on Sunday night in injury time were the difference as Victory spoiled a 2-1 lead with two minutes to go in regular time.

The match was level 1-1 at the 78th-minute mark when Victory's Adama Traore drove the ball into the box, but it rebounded of Kye Rowles into the net for an own goal.

With Melbourne leading 2-1, Leigh Broxham was penalised for a handball in...

Wellington's target of a perfect January is under way with a 2-1 A-League win over Central Coast, built on goals to their English strikers Gary Hooper and David Ball.

The Phoenix extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a workmanlike display at Sky Stadium on Saturday, consigning the 10th-placed Mariners to their fourth loss in five matches.

All of the goals came in the first half via Phoenix players. Seasoned pair Hooper and Ball put the hosts two goals up inside half an hour before Wellington...
