Burnley ultra-cautious in dreadful scoreless draw against Sunderland

Sunderland failed to pick up a much-needed win after they were held at home by Burnley.
Sean Dyche takes his usual pragmatic look at Burnley's draw with Sunderland, and that the result is fair given the play.

This was one of the worst Premier League games of the season, with both Sunderland and Burnley too afraid of losing to try to win the match. Chances came for either side to take what would have been an entirely undeserved victory, but the game had 0-0 written all over it from early in the first half.

Relegation appears to be a certainty for Sunderland, while the Clarets are going to play negative, ultra-cautious football until their own survival is assured.

Burnley have best chance to grab first away win of season at Sunderland

If Burnley fail to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, it will begin to feel inevitable that they are going to go the whole Premier League season without winning away from home.

While the Clarets have one of the best home records in the league, helping them to a seven-point cushion from the relegation zone, their away form remains appalling despite a notable upturn in performance levels in recent weeks and months.

Sean Dyche's side were genuinely unlucky not to get a point from...

Can Man City rebound vs. Liverpool? Wenger under pressure at West Brom

The Exploding Heads break down who would win in a showdown between the cities of Manchester and Liverpool.
The ESPN FC crew present their Premier League relegation predictions, but are there any surprises from the group?

Manchester City and Arsenal are both coming off the back of embarrassing European exits, but City's will hurt more as they were ahead against Monaco. Pep Guardiola has to rouse the troops against Liverpool, who tend to disappoint against smaller clubs but should be perfectly comfortable against the Catalan and his style of play.

Arsene Wenger is under major pressure, so has to get the fans back on his side with a big win over West Brom, while Manchester United's Europa League exploits might see...

Burnley frustrate Liverpool with pressing, Can winner out of the blue

Mark Donaldson and Craig Burley break down Philippe Coutinho's drop in form since his return from injury.
Steve Nicol defends Burnley's style of play and shares his thoughts on Philippe Coutinho's struggles.

Burnley delivered an excellent tactical display to frustrate Liverpool for long spells at Anfield on Sunday, but succumbed to a late first-half equaliser and an excellent winner from Emre Can.

Sean Dyche played his hand perfectly over the first 45 minutes, as Burnley troubled the hosts with long passes. Attacking duo Andre Gray and Ashley Barnes stretched the backline and bullied defenders, with Barnes hitting a slick early opener.

The visitors also repelled Liverpool with their rigid 4-4-2 structure,...

Barnes, Burnley start bright but road woes continue at Liverpool

It was the same old story again for Burnley away from home in the Premier League as they lost 2-1 at Liverpool despite a brave defensive performance at Anfield on Sunday.

The Clarets led early through Ashley Barnes but although they had periods on the front foot they then withdrew and defended too deep, conceding somewhat inevitably in first-half injury time yet again.

Emre Can's second-half strike deserved to win a game of very few chances for either side and Burnley's long wait for a first...
