Benfica to fight corruption charges that could lead to competition ban

Benfica says it will fight corruption charges that could lead to the Portuguese football club being banned from competition.

The Lisbon attorney general's office says it is charging Benfica in connection with alleged attempts to gain access to magistrates' investigations involving the club or their league rivals.

Apart from the club, the public prosecutor is also charging two court clerks.

A judge must now decide if the public prosecutor's evidence is enough to take the case to trial.

Champions League draw: Manchester United to face Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo

FC's Paul Mariner finds it tough to choose Man United to advance from Group H, noting the current negative climate of the club.
Craig Burley says Cristiano Ronaldo's goalless start for Juventus is of no concern, offering a reminder Ronaldo has a recent history of dry spells.
Gab Marcotti speaks to Alexis Nunes about the proposed introduction of VAR in the Champions League and how it will be used.
With a Spanish team winning each of the last five Champions League titles, is this the year their dominance comes to an end?

Juventus will face Manchester United in the Champions League group stage this season, giving Cristiano Ronaldo a chance to play against his former team.

Ronaldo, who joined Juve from Real Madrid earlier this summer, has only faced United in three games since leaving Old Trafford in 2009 -- a two-legged round-of-16 Champions League tie in 2013, and the 2017 UEFA Super Cup.

Ronaldo scored in each leg of the 2013 clash as Real Madrid advanced 3-2 on aggregate. Last summer, he came on as a late substitute...

How Bernardo Silva went from 'Messizinho' to one of Manchester City's best players

As a youngster coming through the ranks at Benfica, Bernardo Silva had two nicknames. One was rather more generous than the other, but both captured something about him and they still do now.

The first was "O Messizinho do Seixal" (Seixal being the neighbourhood were Benfica's academy is based) -- Messizinho meaning "Little Messi" because of similarities between the two players in style.

Indeed, from the moment he first turned up for a trial, Bernardo was a sensation, capable of producing...

Madonna planning to open football academy in Malawi

BLANTYRE, Malawi -- Madonna has plans to open a football academy in Malawi, a move inspired by her adopted son David Banda, who has ambitions to be a professional player and is at Portuguese club Benfica's youth academy.

Madonna follows 12-year-old David's progress in Portugal closely, living in Lisbon and often posting photos and videos from the sidelines of his games.

"It is actually David's idea that we should build a football academy," Madonna said on a recent visit to Malawi, where she adopted...

Former Paraguay international Carlos Gamarra could make a sensational return to football at the age of 47 -- 11 years after announcing his retirement.
