Qatar fined for breaching rules against political statements

ZURICH -- FIFA has fined Qatar's football federation after national team players breached rules against political statements by displaying T-shirts of the country's Emir at a World Cup qualifier.

FIFA says its disciplinary panel imposed a 50,000 Swiss francs ($51,800) fine and reprimanded Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host.

The incident happened in Doha on June 13, amid a dispute with regional rivals Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

Angel Maria Villar resigns as FIFA, UEFA vice president after arrest

La Liga president Javier Tebas is adamant that the Spanish FA will progress after allegations surrounding Angel Maria Villar.

Angel Maria Villar, who is being held in jail in Spain on suspicion of corruption, has resigned from his roles as FIFA senior vice president and UEFA vice president.

In a statement on Thursday, UEFA said Villar offered his resignation a day earlier "as vice president of UEFA and member of the UEFA Executive Committee with immediate effect."

And FIFA followed that up by confirming his resignation shortly afterwards.

Villar was arrested in Spain last week in an investigation into suspected corruption...

Brazil to return to top of FIFA Ranking as Switzerland and Poland climb

Brazil will return to the top of the FIFA Ranking next month, while both Switzerland and Poland will continue their remarkable rise upwards.

Brazil briefly lost the No. 1 position earlier this month after Germany won the Confederations Cup. But the two nations will swap positions again when the new Ranking is published on Aug. 10 as Germany will lose points due to rolling historical results being devalued.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- CONCACAF president Victor Montgliani said talks are "continuing" with CONMEBOL to hold another joint Copa America tournament in North America.

In 2016, the two confederations joined forces to put on the Copa America Centenario in honor of CONMEBOL's 100th anniversary. The tournament was a clear success both in the stands and on the field. The Copa's average attendance of over 46,000 was more than enough to satisfy tournament organizers.

Angel Maria Villar's presidency of the Spanish FA has been suspended.

The Spanish football federation has named a new president while Angel Maria Villar, suspended for a year by the country's top sports authority, remains in prison on charges of corruption.

The federation's board named treasurer Juan Luis Larrea as interim president on Wednesday.

Villar was arrested last week along with his son Gorka, federation vice president Juan Padron and Ramon Hernandez, the secretary of the regional federation of Tenerife.
